    Responsibilities

    Responsible for organizing, overseeing and implementing the plant laboratory in all activities of, production, quality control, raw material qualification and control, sample manufacturing, and quality program. Duties include:

    • Provides testing for internal use services by establishing specimen preparation procedures; developing and implementing analytical procedures; evaluating laboratory information; consulting with Corporate technical and Customers; reporting results according to protocols mandated by Teknor Apex Company and customers.
    • Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
    • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
    • Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustment.
    • Maintains quality results by participating in the Teknor Apex Company quality assurance program, performing proficiency surveys of laboratory staff; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records.
    • Maintains laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.
    • Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress.
    • Maintains laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
    • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
    • Maintains laboratory staff results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
    • Evaluates customer complaints and works with manufacturing personnel to determine root cause of the issue and develop approach to eliminate the root cause. In addition, the Lab manager evaluates corrective actions to ensure effectiveness of addressing the problem.
    • Ensure Company safety practices are enforced and approach is deployed.

    Qualifications & Competencies

    • Four year degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
    • 3 - 5 years of management experience preferably in a chemicals or analytical lab.
    • Work is basically non-standardized and widely varied, involving many complex and significant variables.  Analytic ability and inductive thinking are required to devise new methods in situations where previously accepted methods have proven inadequate.
    • Creative thinking must be practiced in affecting a competitive color match as well as finding ways to make a product cheaper without compromising quality relative to the competition.  Creative thinking must also be used to solve process-related issues with internal and external customers.   Creative thinking is also necessary in order to motivate employees.
